While rubrics are often the tool used for grading, assessing a student’s learning should always extend beyond a product or creation. Ideally, students would share their ideas throughout the process, practicing key communication and presentation skills along the way; but at a minimum each project should culminate with students presenting their work to a wider audience beyond the classroom. In doing so students assume a deeper level of responsibility and accountability for their work.
A presentation does not have to be synonymous with slide decks and bullet points; exhibiting and defending one’s work can take many forms, from speeches and readings to debates, demonstrations, and product pitch sessions.
