What started as a half-day workshop on HCD evolved over the course of thirteen months, with staff from the Consortium for Public Education working with over 100 teachers at Butler Senior High School (SHS) and Butler Intermediate High School (IHS) on incorporating human-centered design (HCD) in their classrooms.
The Consortium team not only taught educators the fundamentals of design thinking and HCD, but also helped them to align these new tools and mindsets to bolster two other district initiatives: personalized learning and portrait of a graduate competencies.
Rather than hear from us, this month we’re featuring two pieces from the educators we worked with at Butler. The first features contributions by a number of Butler Area School District staff setting the context for this work and a more general impact on students.
Our second piece is written by Tonya A. Burgess, a world language teacher at BSHS, as she shares the impact that an intensive year of reimagining her teaching has had on her students as well as herself. We couldn’t say it any better than she could.
