As One Class Ends Another Begins

Published July 25, 2025 by Debbie Pixton

This summer the Consortium launched a new course for school administrators, Leadership through Design: Enhancing Student Growth and Achievement (LTD). Like our other Act 45 offerings for school leaders, this course focuses on using human-centered design (HCD) as a means for administrators to address the myriad of challenges they face in a collaborative way that moves towards action.

As a compact virtual summer course (25 Act 45 hours), LTD pushes participants to rapidly brainstorm and prototype solutions so that they are ready to hit the ground running when the school year kicks off in August.

The combination of synchronous and asynchronous virtual work engaged participants from as far as Upper Bucks County. And the committed team from McKeesport Area School District even participated while attending a conference in Nashville!

If you are interested in joining a growing regional movement toward using design thinking in education, our next opportunity is our in-person, 50-hour course, Using Human-Centered Design to Support Student Growth and Achievement launches with its first in-person session on September 25. We hope to see you there!

Feedback from Leadership through Design’s Summer 2025 cohort:

What was the most valuable part of this course?

“The most valuable part of the course was how it gave us a much more organized and intentional process for ideas and utilizing different stakeholders. I also appreciate that the course made me much more aware of how when we think of ideas to make sure we are thinking of the caregivers of our students.”
What surprised you about this course?

“The amount of information I can use daily in my job. I love that I feel I’m not just throwing ideas at a wall to see what sticks.”

What advice would you give someone considering taking this course?

“Take it. Learning about stakeholder voice & choice and having empathy is crucial to your success as an administrator.”
