SSDC Artifacts and Testimonials

Students in the SSDC (Student Sustainability Design Challenge) spend months investigating a local challenge related to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Explore some of the posters they developed to share their work and research at our annual SSDC Spring Showcase event.

PPS Brashear High School

Demonstrating the conversion of plastic waste into 3D printer filament while showcasing its environmental benefits, including waste reduction, resource conservation, and lower carbon emissions.

Cornell School District

Students led environmental science lessons on sustainability and agriculture, grew fresh produce in the school greenhouse, and partnered with a local food bank to distribute the harvest to community members in need.

Parkway West and Beaver County CTCs

Building off of last year’s Tiny House Project, students took steps to bring their work to life by developing a cost estimate,development drawings, and construction of a full-size module.

Blackhawk School District

Creating a lasting outdoor sensory garden at the high school, using recycled bottle caps to build furniture or an art display, with district-wide collection efforts and a competition to encourage participation.

Bethel Park School Distrct

Designing a rainwater collection system with raised garden beds to reduce runnoff, lower water costs, enhance greenery, and teach sustainability.

East Allegheny School District

Designed a PSA-style poster creating awareness of the dangers of radon and SO2 pollution in the community.

Highlands School District

Written in both English and Spanish, this project focused on promoting language learning in schools for younger children.

Mount Pleasant School District (7th graders)

Reshaping the boating industry through the use of solar energy and recycled materials to improve water quality.

South Fayette School District

A school-wide “Lights off” campaign to reduce energy consumption, focusing on a specific block of time each week (Fridays during 10th period).
