Resource: For Educators, For Partners

Leadership in Learning

Published January 31, 2022 by Pam Gaynor

Begun as a pilot in 2020, Leadership in Learning is designed to raise visibility for Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) among students from participating districts and enlist professionals of color to provide mentoring.

For many students, HBCUs offer advantages. For one thing, they represent a lower cost option in many cases, with tuitions averaging an estimated 30% below comparable institutions. Additionally, they’re known for providing a nurturing environment, which may be particularly important to first-generation college applicants.

In addition to introducing HBCUs to students, Leadership in Learning also pairs groups of students in the program with professionals of color who can share their career insights, answer questions, and serve as sounding boards.
