ELEMENTARY LEVEL AWARDS

Title: Blast Off
Level: Elementary
School: Bentworth Elementary Center, Bentworth School District

Fourth grade students will explore the universe by discovering the theories, designs and methods of rocket science. The exploration of the cosmos will be culminated with the launching and recovery of student-made rockets.

Title: Under the Dirt

"Under the Dirt" finds fourth graders learning about the "Lifestyles of the Small but Mighty". Students will learn about worms and their value to the earth and life on the earth – plants, birds, fish, people. Through their immersion into the lives of worms, the children will study science, social studies, math and language arts.

 Title: The Great Escape

This grant will transform the school halls into the Underground Railroad as fourth graders study about southern slaves seeking their freedom in northern states. Students will examine the life and culture of Blacks in slavery, learn how they survived on their journey to the North, and understand the struggle for freedom. Reading, English, math, social studies and science lessons will revolve around this theme. As a culminating activity, the students portraying slaves, Union and Confederate soldiers, abolitionists and plantation owners will host an evening called "The Flight for Freedom" to demonstrate what they have learned.

 Title: Cowdogs and Crime Fighters

Building on fourth, fifth and sixth graders’ natural love of animals, adventure and the Old West, this project seeks to engage students in listening, reading and writing activities that will promote reading and improve reading comprehension.

Title: Little Red Hen
Level: Elementary
School: Cox-Donahey Elementary School, Brownsville Area School District

This grant will use animals as a theme and real-life experience to enhance student interest in learning in several subject areas. Students will learn about egg incubation and will care for the school hens. Science, reading, math, and language arts lessons will be built around the excitement of observing these and other animals in the school and classroom.

 Title: Terrariums Across Town
Level: Elementary
School: Duquesne Elementary School, Duquesne City School District

Through this environmental awareness grant, special education students will create terrariums and then share them with elderly residents as a welcome for spring. Students will learn about household plants that may be used in a terrarium, including the light and water requirements for each plant. The students will learn how to construct the terrarium from gravel to soil to plants. They will also make decorative animals from seashells for the terrarium. Finally the students will visit the local senior citizen high rise to deliver the terrariums for the residents to enjoy.

Title: The Garden of Happiness: Cultivating a Community

Using the story, The Garden of Happiness, as inspiration, this grant project will find fourth graders participating in a multi-disciplinary study and actively involved in beautifying the grounds around the flagpole at their school. The children will not only learn about plants and flowers but will also create and paint a mural. The dedication of this special area will be on Earth Day, 2001.

Title: Awaking to an Alarm

This grant hopes to address the issue of tardiness at school as it teaches children how to use an alarm clock. The children will learn how to tell time, how to set an alarm clock and time-management skills. Parental involvement will also be a key component of this project.

Title: Flight Into Nature
Level: Elementary
School: Monessen City Elementary School, Monessen City School District

In this environmental awareness project, students will learn about the butterfly lifecycle and flowering plant growth cycles and will adopt an acre of Dominican Republic rain forest. Students will follow their environmental theme through language arts, social studies and science lessons. The study will culminate with a butterfly release with their parents in celebration of Earth Day.

Title: Solar Horsepower Derby
Level: Elementary
School: Port Vue Elementary School, South Allegheny School District

Sixth graders will apply their knowledge of solar energy in creating a workable and usable object of transportation. Students will investigate the variables that affect solar energy transfer. Using this information, they will build a model solar car to race against other student-built models. Through this first-hand experience, the students will learn about solar energy as an alternative source of power.

 

 

Title: Spice It Up
Level: Elementary
School: McClellan Elementary School, West Jefferson Hills School District

"Spice It Up" is a project that promotes student awareness of citizenship and community involvement. Students will learn what makes a community and the roles citizens play in communities. As a community service project, the students will clean up and decorate the many storefront windows of a local vacant property. The students will showcase various community-related services and themes each month. This project will build on the children’s study of community and also actively involve the students in a community project.

Title: The Whole Brain Challenge
Level: Elementary
School: Carmichaels Elementary Center, Carmichaels Area School District

This project will help students develop visual perception skills and enhance spatial thinking skills through the use of manipulatives and games. The students will play visual perception games to develop their ability level and then create their own visual perception challenge to share with others. A culminating activity will be a tournament entitled "The Whole Brain Challenge" within four homerooms.

Title: Flip Thru Math Book Company
Level: Elementary
School: Carmichaels Elementary Center, Carmichaels Area School District

Various math concepts will be reinforced and enriched as fifth graders create math picture books. Students will use die-cut pictures to illustrate math problems and will add a written explanation of the skills being presented. The pages with the visual and written explanations will be laminated into a bound flip-book that will be used for group reviews of the math concepts being learned.

Title: Creepy Crawlies!
Level: Elementary
School: Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School, Jefferson Morgan School District

In Creepy Crawlies, first and fifth graders will buddy-up to learn about spiders, butterflies, worms and chameleons. They will be engaged in a variety of activities that will enhance their understanding of the insect world and keep them creatively engaged in reading, science and mathematics lessons.

Title: Around the World in 180 Days
Level: Elementary
School: Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School, Jefferson Morgan School District

Second graders will journey to at least one country from each continent as they travel around the world in 180 days. Through activities from across the curriculum, the children get their passports stamped and will learn about the people, customs, music, literature, art, history and holidays of various countries. An International Festival will be held as a culminating activity.

Title: What Could I Be From A to Z?
Level: Elementary
School: Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School, Jefferson Morgan School District

"What Could I Be From A to Z?" finds first, second and third graders discovering various occupations – alphabetically. As each letter of the alphabet is studied, an occupation beginning with that letter will be introduced. Community speakers will be asked to visit the classroom or answer a survey about their jobs. Scrapbooks will be made about "What Could I Be From A to Z?"

Title: Sunshine for Seniors
Level: Elementary
School: Bobtown Elementary School, Southeastern Greene School District

This grant project is designed to give students in the fifth and sixth grade learning support program the opportunity to make practical use of their computer, artistic, reading and writing skills while developing an awareness of the shut-in members of their community. In the project, students will study about and plant seeds in student-designed terra cotta pots. After the plants have grown and are nurtured, they will be presented to local community senior citizens.

Title: There Is No Place Like Home

In this great idea, students will utilize partnership reading to learn about their home, planet Earth. Nonfiction books will enrich their knowledge about animals, natural habitats, weather, and the regions of the earth. Pre- and post-reading activities will find students making lists of facts, researching related web sites, participating in discussions and presenting reports. Through these high-interest topics, this partnership will improve reading skills and promote and understanding of the earth.

Title: Learning Is S.U.P.E.R. (Students Utilizing Partnership for Effective Reading)

In this grant project, second and sixth grade students will buddy-up to form learning partners to improve their reading skills and also to learn about environmental science. Fiction books containing environmental awareness messages will be critically read and summarized, discussed, explained or dramatized. Students will use the internet to research environmental issues and projects. Finally, the partners will form teams to make a difference in their community and to keep the school property and neighborhood free of litter.
