Title: Growing and Changing ­ Flowers, Vegetables and Us!

School: Carmichaels Elementary (Carmichaels Area School District)

This grant project finds children charting the growth of plant bulbs, seedlings, and themselves. They will prepare and plant the bulbs and seeds that will be used in the butterfly garden, observe and record their observations, and discover that everything grows and changes, including themselves.

Title: Stories Alive!

Presently, junior high students read to elementary students in an effort to promote a love of books. This grant will add a new dimension to this activity by incorporating character puppets into the reading presentation.

Title: First Impressions

This program will help high school learning-support students with appropriate grooming and personal appearance as part of their transition experiences to independence and future employment. Students will complete a self-evaluation of their personal grooming and develop strategies to better themselves. Classroom discussions, guest speakers, and mock interviews will reinforce the concept of grooming and first impressions. As part of this process, students will make appointments at the local Vo-tech for hair and hand grooming assistance.

Title: Savor the Story

Savor the Story finds students reading American literature from various time periods and finding the foods mentioned in those works to prepare and share with classmates. Some of the food may be exactly what the characters ate (a bowl of rice covered with milk, sugar, and peppermint) or something that is representative of the reading (pond water might be brown Kool-aid with gummy worms). This project provides motivation to read classic literature, promotes creativity and includes a fun activity.

Title: Simply Simple Machines

First Graders will work with their teacher and librarian to investigate and learn the basic concepts and skills in an area of physical science ­ simple machines. Then the children will work in teams to create simple machine models using Lego blocks. The children will be engaged in team cooperation, problem solving, and the application of their knowledge and skills gained through their lessons and research. The finished projects will be displayed with descriptions and narratives written by the students.

Title: Write a Childrenıs Book

This grant project will exercise student creativity as they write, edit, and illustrate a childrenıs story book. The resulting storybooks will be shared with younger students in the school.

Title: Keys to Reading
Level: Elementary

This great idea seeks to reinforce reading skills and an enjoyment of reading by linking reading between the school and home. Students will receive books to be read at home. Students will read at least two books each week and will create flip-books that will describe the storyıs elements through writing and drawing. The children will be rewarded with "keys" that contain the title, author, and date the story was read. Guest readers and food treats will also reward the student for achieving his/her goals and to provide motivation for the reading project.

Title: We Know Where We Are Going And How To Get There

This grant project intends to partner regular education students and learning support students for "mobility training" ­ teaching and familiarizing students with independent travel. Students will experience various modes of public transportation that will expand their opportunities of job training education, and employment.

Title: Pride Entrepreneurship and the Duquesne School Store

A school store will be created through this Great Idea Grant with the Learning Support/Life Skills and Gifted students taking on the tasks of purchasing, record keeping, inventory, pricing, selling, marketing and the related banking duties. Students will apply for the various positions of their business. Academic skills across the curriculum will be reinforced while social skills, creative thinking, decision making and problem solving skills are enhanced. The school store will be for the benefit of all students Grades K-12.

Title: Journey to India

School: Westinghouse Elementary (East Allegheny School District)

This grant project will enhance an interdisciplinary unit on India, involving Social Studies, Language Arts and the Fine Arts. Students will take an imaginary voyage to India to explore its art and culture. While "traveling," they will have hands-on experiences that will allow them to explore Indiaıs rich culture through music, dance, art, games, movies, clothing and food.

Title: Book Chatter

School: Westinghouse Elementary (East Allegheny School District)

This great idea will foster literary discussion and promote reading as a meaningful experience through the formation of a book discussion group. The students will read Ann Frank: Diary of a Young Girl and Music of the Dolphins. After reading each selection and with the teacher as the facilitator, students will discuss the book, its relevance, their interpretations, etc. The book group will add multiple dimensions to their reading experience as they express their own ideas and listen to the ideas of others.

Title: Career Portfolios

School: East Allegheny High (East Allegheny School District)

This grant seeks to help students create a personalized Career Portfolio that will give direction and the tools with which the students may attain their future career goals. Beginning in seventh grade, students will investigate their career opportunities as part of their "Cycle classes". They will do interest inventories to determine possible career paths and academic course selection. In subsequent grades students will continue with career exploration, post-secondary school investigations, letter and resume writing, and professional contacts. The student will take their Career Portfolio with them upon graduation.

Title: Making Rainbows
Level: Middle
School: Elizabeth Forward Middle (Elizabeth Forward School District)

The purpose of this grant project is to introduce students to the ancient art of marbling. Students will learn the marbling process and use it to create original art and practical items. The marbleized paper can be used to make note cards, collages, origami, place mats, picture framing or desk sets.


 

Title: Remember ­ Relive ­ Rejoice

School: Elizabeth Forward Middle (Elizabeth Forward School District)

Building on a year-long thematic study of the 20th century, this grant will find students planning, constructing and performing in a living time-line. The living time-line will highlight the 1900ıs and showcase memorabilia and student work. The other grade levels of the school, as well as community members, will be invited to view the time-line.

Title: America's Rainbow

School: Jefferson Morgan Elementary (Jefferson Morgan School District)

This project is designed to improve skills in english, Writing, Social studies and Math by having learning support students collect postcards from the "colorful" cities in our country. Students will write to postmasters in selected cities (ex. Greenville, Ill. or Red Lion, PA) and collect postcard pictures of that city. Each student will assist in creating a portfolio of the cities and their own journal as they learn about each place. America's Rainbow will help students improve skills while having "colorful" fun.

Title: Wetland Laboratory

Wetland Laboratory is designed to introduce seventh grade science students to different aspects of ecology. Students will help design the pond with the types of plants and animals that are suited to it. They will test water samples and view plant cells, bacteria and protozoa under the microscope and learn about careers related to ecology and the environment.

Title: Komputer Kidz Konnection

Komputer Kidz Konnection will create a face-to-face culminating activity for the MASD Kid Link Club. The MASD Kid Link Club is an after-school club at W. O. and G. W. Elementary Schools that reinforces reading and writing skills by utilizing the computer, Internet and "keypals" from the partnering school. Students learn to set up e-mail accounts, the etiquette and safety measures in using the Internet. Reading and writing skills are practiced in a motivating way. The culminating activity will be a computer scavenger hunt, computer terminology bingo, and Internet safety word search along with finding their keypal and making new friends.

Title: Make the World More Beautiful

In this program, third graders will participate in an inter-disciplinary unit on the environment and the rain forest. The project will utilize hands-on activities, demonstrations and speakers with a "Make the World More Beautiful" theme. Students will transform their hallways into the rainforest, discuss how to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and study animals and their habitats. Students will learn about environmental issues and plant on a local farm. The program will raise environmental awareness among the students.

Title: Water, Water Everywhere
Level: Elementary
School: Monongahela Elementary (Ringgold School District)

This great idea finds second graders exploring all aspects of water ­- rain, snow, ice, floods, rivers, lakes, oceans. The hallways will be transformed into an underwater world carefully noting the differences of cold and warm ocean climates and the animal and plant life associated with each. Guest speakers will also address this theme. A culminating activity will be an Hawaiian Luau.

Title: Reading From the Heart

This grant will enable the school district to connect its character education program with the community. Using the Heartwood Ethics Reading Series, readers will visit the classrooms monthly to read stories focusing on universal traits (respect, responsibility, thankfulness, kindness and compassion, loyalty, pride, honesty, tolerance, accountability, self-discipline, integrity, safety and courtesy). This project will compliment the district's current character education program.

Title: Glockenspiels
Level: Elementary
School: Port Vue Elementary (South Allegheny School District)

This grant will expand the music experiences of the Port Vue students in an Orff Schulwerk program for grades K ­ 6. This music process combines dance, movement and song. Students will be introduced to the alto and soprano glockenspiels. Students will demonstrate what they have learned in concerts at school and senior citizen center.

Title: Shoot for the Stars

School: Port Vue Elementary (South Allegheny School District)

Students will construct and launch a model rocket after they have completed a study of the concepts of flight and the history of flight. This study will be a multi- disciplinary approach including science, mathematics, health and safety, and language arts. Students will also construct paper airplanes and gliders to demonstrate their understanding of the concept of flight.

Title: Westward Ho!
Level: Elementary
School: Jefferson Elementary School (West Jefferson Hills School District)

This grant will help recreate the Old West on the school grounds. The fifth grade will engage in an interdisciplinary study on the American West culminating in panning for gold, demonstrations of spinning, candle-making, square dancing, etc. Parent volunteers and TJ High School students will assist with the recreation and reenactments. The fifth graders will also share their knowledge with fourth graders.

Title: Paralympics
Level: Elementary
School: H.W. Good Elementary School (Yough School District)

In the spirit of the Summer Olympics, this project will find students participating in a competition that will raise the awareness of skills used by the disabled. Students will navigate an obstacle course and shoot basketball in a wheelchair. They will throw and catch a ball(with bells inside) blindfolded. The exercises will be promote an understanding of various handicaps and an appreciation of those who are challenged.

Title: Art's Alive
Level: Elementary
School: West Newton Elementary School (Yough School District)

This great idea will bring art history to life for the fifth grade as they assume a character in Renoirıs "Luncheon of the Boating Party". After studying the Impressionistic art style, students will create a large mural that will reproduce the background in the Renoir painting. Students will then use costumes, and props to become the characters and foreground of the painting. The final scene will be photographed and made into a poster. Painting, art history and art appreciation will come to life for these students.
