(Building Educational Leadership Incorporating an Enlightened Voice for Everyone at South Allegheny Middle School)

A mentoring program for 7th and 8th grade students. Students will form “families” and create relationships that will serve to increase communication and social skills. Through the development of trust, students will be able to ask one another for advice and help. This project was created to encourage communication among peers and provide students with a voice and a means to solve problems.

Deer Lakes Middle School

T.A.T.U.
With You (Teens Against Tobacco Use)
Grades 6,7 and 8

The purpose of this project is to increase the visibility of an existing program. Thirty students are part of the T.A.T.U. traveling road shows that empower students to say no to tobacco. T.A.T.U. students will deliver monthly messages to the Deer Lakes Middle School via public service announcements on Channel One. The team also will develop and maintain an informational bulletin board and a link to the district’s website.

Laurel Highlands Middle School

Project Wisdom
Grades 6, 7 and 8

Through the school’s character awareness program, Project Wisdom will develop leadership qualities and create higher-level thinking skills. The program includes a daily thought-provoking message designed for the school’s in house television broadcasts and lesson plans to reinforce the skills. The focus of the 2008-09 school year will be Anger Management and Conflict Resolution. The three-part series will enable the school to rotate the program year to year.

Walk-n-Talk Peer Mentoring
Grades 7 and 8

The Walk-n-Talk program meets after school two days a week to promote healthy living habits for 7th and 8th grade students. Advisors ask students to participate. Students then are paired with a high school mentor. They will walk a mile, have a healthy snack and participate in a lesson that promotes healthy exercise, eating, academic or social skills.

Charleroi Area High School

It’s All Related!
Grades 9,10,11 and 12

Charleroi High School has related the increase of teen pregnancies to the lack of role models regarding appropriate and healthy relationships. The program will educate Charleroi students in effective communication skills, increase personal self-esteem, and develop other healthy habits that would in turn help them establish and maintain healthy relationships. Members of the FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) will use the LifeSkills Training curriculum along with the Real Baby Simulator to educate students in communication, decision-making, and goal setting.

Students a part of the Teen Institute program will serve as mentors to the 7th and 8th grade students. The agenda is to educate students about alcohol, tobacco, drugs, media awareness, bullying, healthy relationships and appropriate conflict resolution. The middle school students will participate in various activities led by high school mentors.

(Trinity Hillers Inspiring Nice/Neat Kids)
Grades 6 thru 10

Trinity Area High School will incorporate guest speakers on various topics to increase student achievement and healthy relationships. The Middle School will incorporate the LifeSkills Training program with high school mentors to facilitate classrooms lessons that will increase media awareness. Students will use digital recorders to make all materials available during the school year.
