ELEMENTARY LEVEL AWARDS

Title: Choral Chimes
Level: Elementary & Middle
School: Marion Elementary School, Bellmar Middle School, Belle Vernon Area School District

In this great idea, the student-use of tone chimes will enhance the music program at both the middle and elementary levels. Not only will students gain hands-on experience with sound production and rhythms, but they will also gain an appreciation of instrumentation.

Title: For Children…A Special Space

In this project, students will study Renaissance Art and create their own art paintings and sculpture for each Renaissance theme. A permanent art gallery will be created in the school and will feature individual student talent. Students will be artists, art critics, art patrons, and gallery artists in this grant project.

Title: From Minerals to Dinner Rolls: Cooking Up Geological Formations

This grant will extend the study and research about rocks and minerals to include three science experiments in crystal, geode and stalactite formation. Through the experiments, the students will better understand the physical properties of geological formations.

Title: The Magnificent Six: Simple Machines
Level: Elementary

Expanding upon the third graders study of machines, this grant adds a hands-on approach to help the children better understand the concepts behind the machines by giving students the opportunity to build those machines. Students will construct the six simple machines in cooperative groups and learn the principles from which all other machines evolved.

Title: Just a Hunka, Hunka Burning Rock: Meteors and Other Objects From Space

This grant will initiate a five-day, hands-on outer space unit for students in grades K-5. In classroom-size groups, children will assume the role of an object from outer space (planets, meteors, asteroids, etc) and learn about the rotation, revolution and other pertinent facts about the various objects. They will visit the school planetarium and learn about the constellations. The study is designed to give the students an understanding of the solar system through an enrichment activity outside of their classroom.

Title: Gingerbread Men Paragraphs
Level: Elementary

Students will make decorated gingerbread men and then practice their writing skills as they describe their work on the gingerbread men. This activity will reinforce time-ordered detailing around a tangible main idea.

Title: Plant Necklaces
Level: Elementary

As a culminating activity to the study of plants and seeds, students will have the opportunity to not only plant but also wear their own "plant necklace". The children will sow and care for their necklace and then get to proudly wear their science lessons.

Title: President Flash Cards

This grant is in response to the interest expressed by the third grade students in presidential trivia. Each child will use flash cards of the presidents to share with their families.

Title: A Salute to Our Veterans

This grant activity is an outgrowth of students learning about patriotism. Students will demonstrate their appreciation to our local veterans by participating in a program to honor them. Students will engage in a variety of activities such as writing an essay on what the American Flag means to them, learning songs and poems related to this theme, creating a time-line of American history, etc.

Title: Little Hands Reach Out
Level: Elementary
School: Charleroi Elementary School, Charleroi Area School District

This grant activity will find kindergarten children and third graders preparing for and visiting the local senior citizens center. Students will learn songs, dance, and poems to share with the seniors. They will also participate in joint craft activities. Both students and the seniors will benefit from the sharing and interaction of this activity.

Title: BLT Lunch
Level: Elementary
School: Charleroi Elementary School, Charleroi Area School District

After reading a children’s novel independently during the month, students will enjoy a book talk during their lunch. Modeled after Oprah’s Book Club, students at the "BLT," Book Lunch Talk, will engage in a grand conversation about their reading selection. Parents and teachers will volunteer to be BLT discussion leaders. The children will be able to connect to the literature in a meaningful way and be on their way to becoming lifelong, engaged readers.

Title: Let’s Play Math
Level: Elementary
School: Westinghouse Elementary School, East Allegheny School

The goal of this idea is to excite and enhance learning in Math through fun, cooperative, hands-on activities. Students will use manipulatives to reinforce lessons in measuring, graphing, fractions, and geometry. The manipulatives demonstrate the mathematical concepts that the students are learning and help them increase their understanding and performance in Math.

 

 

Title: Reading Olympics
Level: Elementary
School: Westinghouse Elementary School, East Allegheny School District

This great idea will create a competitive, fun, and motivating program that will build vital literacy skills. Each student will be challenged to read 25 books during the school year. For every five books completed the students will wear a ribbon in a color corresponding to a color in the Olympic flag. Upon completion of all 25 books, students will participate in a day of Olympic events including swimming. A local athlete will visit the school and also host the Olympic day.

Title: Chips and Chapters
Level: Elementary
School: George Washington Elementary School, McKeesport Area School District

Chips and Chapters will allow third grade students an opportunity to explore chapter books and expose them to a variety of literature. Each student will participate in three-guided book projects and present their projects to their classmates. In addition to being introduced to a gallery of literature, students will develop organizational skills, exercise their creativity, build communication skills, and enhance their interest in independent reading.

Title: Tiger S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

Tiger S.U.C.C.E.S.S., (School Using Color Codes to Ensure Student Safety), is an animated system, using color coded tigers, to help primary students, staff and visitors to navigate through the school (an overwhelming physical plant) and provide a cheerful, welcoming, positive environment. Kid-friendly cartoon images of tigers will indicate direction, appropriate behavior, and highlight key locations. Parents, teachers, and high school students will all be engaged in mapping, graphic design, and painting. The end result will allow elementary students to take pride in their surroundings and make their environment friendly and safe.

Title: Community Walkway

This grant aims to promote community unity and enhance the school environment with the creation of a landscaped "community walkway" to the school. These efforts will not only be a community service project to beautify the school grounds, but it will also be a learning experience for many of the students in the school.

Title: Famous Pennsylvanian Quilt Project
Level: Elementary
School: Park Elementary School, Steel Valley School District

As students study about the history of Pennsylvania, they will be writing to famous Pennsylvanians. They will share information about their study with each person and ask for their signature on a square of fabric to be included in a giant Pennsylvania quilt. When the project is finished, the famous Pennsylvanians will be invited to a celebration unveiling the completed quilt.

Title: The Global Child: A Celebration of Cultural Diversity

In this great idea, students will be learning about other cultures and cultures focusing on commonalities and exploring the many parallels in foods, folk tales, customs, and traditions. Students will also research and explore the richness of their personal biographic mosaic. The yearlong study will end with a showcase of culture with each grade level spotlighting a different culture and its customs. All children will have the opportunity to present and be a participant in this culminating event.

Title: Write It, Read It, Print It, Send It
Level: Elementary

This grant project will take students through the entire writing process with a bound book as the final product. The students will "self-select" their best works to become part of a writing portfolio. Copies of the completed works will be displayed and shared with the community.

Title: A Magical Combination
Level: Elementary

The intent of this grant project is to help students enhance their vocabulary development and strengthen comprehension as they read stories along with audio-tape of the story. Students will enjoy the magical combination of listening to a story and following it in print. Phonics, reading patterns and rhythms can be modeled. After listening to a story, children and parents together will complete activities pertaining to the story.

Title: Fun With Phonics

The purpose of "Fun with Phonics" is to enhance the students’ ability to decode words through hands-on activities and manipulation of letter sounds. By using items such as string, clay, and magnetic letters, struggling students will use all their senses to learn to decode words. The grant project hopes to give students success in reading that in-turn will encourage more reading and more success.

Title: In The Eyes of a Colonial Child
Level: Elementary
School: H. W. Good Elementary School, Yough School District

This grant project is designed to enhance the second grade study of communities. Students will compare and contrast today’s community life with that of Colonial America. Students will recreate a colonial village, making homes and shops and dressing in colonial attire as they share about community life in Colonial times.

Title: Math Month in the Library
Level: Elementary
School: Mendon Elementary School, Yough School District

In this grant project, students will strengthen math skills through a variety of enrichment and reinforcement activities. They will participate in math activities derived from stories; i.e.: first graders will make clocks and display the times while hearing The Grouchy Ladybug. Also, each grade level will participate in math centers geared to their grade level. Parent volunteers will help monitor the centers.
